January is National Cervical Cancer Awareness Month. This is an important time to remind women of the significance of getting regular pap tests to check for an HPV infection or other sexual transmitted disease, which are risk factors for developing cervical cancer. Nearly half of all cervical cancers occur in women who have never had a Pap test, and although this particular cancer can be highly preventable, more than 4,000 women in the United States alone die from the disease each year.
