March is Colon Cancer Awareness Month

Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer in the United States and a leading cause of death from cancer. Colorectal cancer affects all racial and ethnic groups and is most often found in people ages 50 and older.

The best way to prevent colorectal cancer is to get screened regularly starting at age 50. There are often no signs or symptoms of colorectal cancer – that’s why it’s so important to get screened.

People over age 50 have the highest risk of colorectal cancer. You may also be at higher risk if you are African American, smoke, or have a family history of colorectal cancer.

Everyone can take these healthy steps to help prevent colorectal cancer:

  • Get screened starting at age 50.
  • Quit smoking and stay away from secondhand smoke.
  • Get active and eat healthy.

Take care of yourself and help your friends and family know and understand the importance of screening, eating healthy and getting enough exercise. As always we, at Mid FL Cancer Centers, are caring for your life.

Breast Cancer Treatment

Often with breast cancer, there are no noticeable exterior signs that you can feel or see.  If there are outward signs, the first and most common symptoms can include a dimple in the breast, or a lump. This lump feels slightly different from the rest of the breast tissue and can be extremely alarming and frightening for a woman. Once the lump is identified by the patient, or found in a routine clinical examination, a diagnostic mammogram will be performed to confirm or renounce the presence of breast cancer.

If the mammogram shows the lump to be malignant and a diagnosis of cancer has been given by the doctor, breast cancer treatment must start shortly thereafter. There are various breast cancer treatment options available. Determining which option will be most effective for the patient will depend on the size of the tumor and what stage the cancer has developed to. Typically, treatment of breast cancer is implemented through surgery, chemotherapy, or radiation therapy, or a combination of therapies.

To find out more about the various treatment options for breast cancer, call Mid Florida Cancer Centers today at (866) 977 – 6322 and one of our cancer specialists will be happy to go over any questions or concerns you may have.

January is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month

January is National Cervical Cancer Awareness Month. This is an important time to remind women of the significance of getting regular pap tests to check for an HPV infection or other sexual transmitted disease, which are risk factors for developing cervical cancer. Nearly half of all cervical cancers occur in women who have never had a Pap test, and although this particular cancer can be highly preventable, more than 4,000 women in the United States alone die from the disease each year.
